North Central Amateur Regional recap and gallery
As the run-up to the Monster Energy Amateur Nations at Loretta Lynn’s is almost complete, the North Central Regional Championship was held at Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut Illinois this past weekend. The weather was hot and clear for 90% of the weekend, which led to trucks and trucks of water needed on the track to keep it in good shape. The afternoon on Sunday did take a dramatic turn as a strong thunderstorm rolled into the area fast with 60+ Mph winds and a massive downpour for about 15 to 20 minutes. This ultimately led to the remaining moto three races being canceled and those that did not have a third moto would be scored on a two-moto format. The rain was just too much to bring the track back in time and also would have made it impossible for medics to get to an athlete should help be needed and this is what led the AMA to make the call and shorten the racing.
The racing was intense and pretty much non-stop until the storm brought things to a close. Most classes were pretty closely contested and only a few were sweeps, which kept things interesting and kept everyone guessing to the end. Awards were handed out to the top six finishers in each class which earned them the invitation to the Ranch as part of the forty fastest in each class to contest for the coveted number one plate. The first week of August is when the motocross world shuts down and visits Loretta Lynn’s ranch for a week of the best amateur racing in the world.
