Detroit Supercross 2024 sneak peek

When Supercross rolls into Detroit this weekend for round 5 the season is already 25% done and has had a lot of talk about so far. As fans we can only hope that the level of racing and action continues. Detroit has been hosting SX racing since 1976 in the Silverdome and that year they held 5 rounds of racing. From 1976 through 2005 the Silverdome hosted 46 rounds of SX racing which makes it third in the locations that have held the most rounds behind Angel Stadium and Daytona Speedway. Ford Field began hosting SX racing in 2006 and this year will be the 11th time overall and the 57th time for the City of Detroit.

This is also the first round racing moves indoors so we know the rain won’t be a factor this week. But they are racing earlier into the season in Detroit than normal so the dirt conditions could be different than past years because of frozen dirt or moisture in the dirt. We do expect that we should start to see a few riders start to standout from others in the pact for whos going to contend for the championship. So far with the two mud races and A1 each of the first four rounds has been a guessing game and kept things very close which has been great for fans. The points races is very close and we’ve had a different winner for each round in both the 250 and 450 classes.

So who has the most 450 SX wins in Detroit? Here is a top list:

  1. Bob Hannah (9 Wins)

  2. Jeremy McGrath (6 Wins)

  3. Eli Tomac & Damon Bradshaw (4 Wins ea.)

  4. Chad Reed & James Steward (3 Wins ea.)

450 SX Story Lines

We will start this off with the Jet vs Jason drama and thats about all that I want to say about it. Loved to see the passion from both of them and that they did not let it affect racing, but was bummed to see so many people Booing Jet during opening ceremonies for A2. He’s a kid and probably just a bit frustrated and is learning along the way and we can’t forget that because he’s already so damn good. So many other good things to talk about this season so far. Cooper Webb has found another gear and wont just rely on being mister consitent, Jason Anderson seems to be back like a mad man, Chase Sexton is close to full speed and seems to for now stayed clear of those mental mistakes, and just when people were saying maybe Tomac has lost a step he comes out and wins a moto and podiums at A2. Whew, the field is so deep its impossible to make my fantasy picks, I’ve never scored so few points as this year.

Will Aaron Plessinger keep on the pace he’s been at so far and try and finally complete that win in Detroit that slipped away last year? I can promise you that if he does win even a heat in the motor city the place is gonna go bananas being an Ohio native its his home race. Will Jett get a good start and run away with it or if he gets burried in the pack does he have the grit to pass all these killers to get back to the front. Thats something that Tomac has had that others did not and this field is super deep and very few of them seem interested in giving him a free pass.

250 SX Story Lines

The west cost 250 rounds has been pretty wild with four different winners and not a lot of podium consistency so far keep the points race interesting. They will get just a one week breather before getting back to racing for round 6 in Arizona next weekend. This is the week we get a glimpse at the east coast series and there are a number of riders with interesting story lines. We got Haiden Deegan the internet sensation that took racing by storm last year who had a small wrist injury that came to light recent. He says he will be racing but we’re all gonna have to wait and see how he looks. Will he be rusty, will he try and control that balls out constant attack style he likes to ride with?

The Pro Circuit team is running Austin Forkner and Cameron McAdoo both of which are midwest riders so there is a special place in our hearts for them. But they both have had a lot of crashes and injuries that kept them off the tracks. Each has won races and showed crazy skill that they are looked at as contenders if they can stay upright and healthy. We are pulling for both of these guys to be consistent podium placers and in the running for the points lead.

And last but not least is Triumph enters the series for the first time with two riders racing the 250 east series. This is a new manufacturer and team and Jalek Swoll and Evan Ferry will be the riders. It’s great to see new bikes and teams enter and help the sport grow along with Beta this year and Ducati coming in 2026.
